Archdiocese of Washington apologizes for denying Communion to lesbian at her mother’s funeral

The below is an example of how outlandish and harmful anti-gay sentiment can be. Reposted from The Washington Post:

WASHINGTON — The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington has apologized to a woman who was denied Holy Communion at her mother’s funeral Mass because she is a lesbian.


When she knelt before [Rev. Marcel] Guarnizo to receive Communion last Saturday, [Barbara] Johnson said he told her, “I cannot give you Communion because you live with a woman, and in the eyes of the church that is a sin.”


Johnson said she received apologies from the parish pastor and two diocesan officials, including the Most Rev. Barry Knestout, the auxiliary bishop and vicar general of the archdiocese. Knestout wrote her a letter apologizing for a “lack of pastoral sensitivity.”
