You are all familiar with the quote from Martin Luther King, Jr.’s ‘I Have a Dream’ speach:
I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.
LGBT folks now have a similar quote for our own civil rights struggle. This quote comes from testimony by Lincoln’s Public Safety Director Tom Casady in support of an ordinance in Lincoln, Nebraska that would protect LGBT residents from discrimination in housing, employment and public accomidations. The two murderers who Mr. Casady references in the below quote are two men who murdered Harold Grover, a gay employee of Dillard’s department store in 1993 simply because he was gay.
…I believe an ordinance like this is a small step, a very small step, but it’s a step towards making Lincoln an infertile ground for the attitudes that nurture the mindset of these two murderers and for all those other people whose own moral conscience is so weak and debased that they judge people by their characteristics rather than their character…
I dream of a day when LGBT people are judged; when all individuals are judged, based on their character vs. their characteristics.
