Why It Gets Better: Miss USA Supportive of Transgender Contestants

The newly crowned Miss USA, Olivia Culpo of Rhode Island responed with the below when asked if it would be “fair” for a transgender contestant to win Miss USA:

 “I do think it would be fair…” [because] “there are so many people who have a need to change for a happier life. I do accept that because I believe it’s a free country.” The crowd erupted with cheers. — from the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) website

It was just a few weeks ago that Miss Universe contestant Jenna Talackova caused a bit of stir because she is transgender. So, having a winning contestant of another competition express support for transgender contestants is just another reason why it gets better.
