Why It Gets Better: Knoxville, Tenn. Mayor Declares Gay Is Okay

While Tennessee can sometimes seem backwards with things like trying to pass a ‘don’t say gay’ bill, there are bits of progress moving forward. Such is the case in Knoxville, Tenn. where Mayor Madeline Rogero declares ‘it’s okay to say gay’ as she celebrates Knoxville Pride.

I recently saw Larry Kramer’s The Normal Heart where one of the plot points is how the mayor of New York City wouldn’t meet with gay activists during the start of the AIDS crisis; when people were dying in numbers by the week. To go from having one of the cities with the most recognized gay poplulations not getting face time with the mayor during a health crisis to having a mayor of what is sometimes thought of as not very gay-friendly state celebrate gay pride with us and state ‘gay is okay’ is another reason why it gets better.

Why It Gets Better is a series of postings showing, real-time, concrete, tangible ways that life is getting better for LGBT people.
