Today’s Lesson In Gay History: Vito Russo GLAAD Co-Founder

On July 23 at 9PM HBO will be premiering the film Vito about the life of Vito Russo. When talking about Russo, he is most noted as the author of The Celluloid Closet, a book about the history of LGBT portrayals in the movies, but he was much more than that. Vito was an AIDS activist and, most importantly, a co-founder of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLADD), an organization that has recently started a commentator accountability project to highlight how anti-gay spokespersons and interviewees in the media defame gay people when off camera.
