Yesterday at his press conference to address the Tuesday shooting at the Family Research Council (FRC) headquarters, Tony Perkins took an oportunistic stance; saying that the ‘hate-group’ label from the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) gave the gunman a “license to [shoot].” Below is how the story is displayed on the advocate.com.
If you look just to the right of the FRC headline, you’ll see another article in crime news that I’ve highlighted in the purple box. This one is about “Flaming Projectiles” (belived to be flares) that were thrown into the patio of a Salt Lake City gay bar. Thankfully, no one was hurt in that incident.
No word from Tony Perkins or any other anti-gay group on just where these perpetrators may have gotten their ‘license’ for this incident.
Let’s be honest here, the Southern Poverty Law Center didn’t just throw out a ‘hate-group’ label for opponents of Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) equality. They did it because such groups, including FRC, spread lies and misinformation about LGBT people. They use fear vs. facts to rally support for themselves and to get their message across.
Tony Perkins used his press conference to try and shame equality forces, but the real shame in his speech is that he didn’t use it as an opportunity to condemn violent acts, such as the one in Salt Lake City, should they happen to LGBT opponents or LGBT people themselves.
