From WRIC in Richmond, Va.:
Chief Ray Tarasovic has appointed an officer to be the first ever liaison between the department and the LGBT community.
Major Odetta Johnson, who already has several roles within the department, will now be the LGBT Community Liaison.
“When you have a same-sex couple and there’s domestic violence, one might be hesitant to call the police for fear of how that police officer may react to the fact that its two men or two women,” [Bill Harrison, executive director of the Richmond Gay Community Foundation] says.
Harrison, along with several other people met with Chief Tarasovic back in the spring to talk about police relationships with the LGBT community.
“The chief was very positive,” He says. “He’s worked in large metropolitan areas before. He understands the need for this sort of thing and he was very encouraging and is striving to make sure that everyone in the community knows that if they feel threatened or they are in danger that they need to call 911 no matter who they are.”
“Major Johnson has been a key person in making this process so seamless. She’s been very involved in our community thus far.”
