Why it Get’s Better: You Could Be Drafted by the NFL

Congratulations to football player Michael Sam on his draft to the St. Louis Rams. Sam had come out as gay in February of 2014 when he was still in college.

You can watch the moment Sam got the NFL draft call below.

What makes this a Why It Gets Better post is the commentary from New York Daily News:

This was not a noble decision by the Rams. It was a football decision.

Gay people want to be judged as people first and as gay not at all. That Sam was drafted based on his football ability speaks to us getting closer to the day when we are all judged just by the content of our characters.

His draft also shows us moving away from the fear of a professional team in having a gay player and demonstrates to players that their is less to fear in being out themselves.

As Harvey Milk famously said, “You gotta give ’em hope.” Sam’s draft does just that for a lot of LGBT people, youth and the world itself.
