Why It Gets Better: Gay-Inlcusive Ads in Public Spaces

The below has begun appearing in and around Washington, D.C.’s METRO subway system.

It wasn’t too long ago that ads like this would only appear in gay publications; if they appeared at all. There are many business with which gay organizations have done business or acquired sponsorships from that if they advertised at all, it was only in the publications that were related to the specific event with which the business was involved: pride, event programs, playbills, etc. Many times, that ad was one where someone in marketing slapped a rainbow somewhere in one of the mainstream advertisements or they would use a mainstream ad that had only one sex in it; ‘see it’s three guys/girls with drinks in their hands at a bar. That’s makes the ad gay-inclusive.’ And we were all just grateful that they would make any attempt to advertise with us at all.

Now, we have ads like this Marriott one; out in a public space; where the general public sees it every day. And it’s pretty clear that these two guys are in a relationship. Seeing yourself reflected, in public, in advertising like this one is another reason why it gets better.
